"INTERDISCIPLINARY ARTS (IA) gives students the opportunity to develop expertise in areas spanning written, visual, performance, sound and video, digital, and publication arts as they respond to the constantly evolving world of contemporary arts practice. The IA major is built on the belief that meaningful contributions to art can be made by anyone from any class, ethnicity, race, nationality, gender, ability, and background.

Students in the IA major explore the many ways in which artists and their art publicly address complex cultural, philosophical and political phenomena. The curriculum emphasizes research-based art production, while addressing questions of media and genre as these are being transformed through current art practices.  In each of these settings students gain production skills and develop their critical thinking, historical and aesthetic awareness, and cultural and digital literacy."

ACTIVISM GRAPHICS

Barbara Kruger: Political is Personal, Visual Art & Activism intersection.

A picture series emulating Barbara Kruger's process and style of bringing awareness to political issues. I decided to create graphics with phrases to speak on current issues such as #NODAPL (Native American Rights), Patriarchy, Capitalism, Consumerism, and Political Corruption.

Torpey Mobility Campaign, Visual Art & Human Rights intersection.

Posters/propaganda/campaign to interpret John Torpey's discourse on the policing of mobility through identification documents. My group and I decided to creatively create a campaign that would fit into a dictatorship dystopian society where the government promotes the invasion of privacy and bodies (inspired by the novel 1984 & Big Brother).

PERFORMANCE/VISUAL

ART

The Red Intervention Series, Performance & Visual Art intersection

This is my series of how to present an intervention with reality. It was an intersection of public performance art and the power of photography to showcase my imagination. My intention was to bring a pop of color in mundane settings that is up for interpretation.

VIDEO

Climate Refugees, Climate Science, Human Rights, & Video

This video is to bring awareness to climate change and those who are affected by it, climate refugees of island nations. We discuss the Green House effect, human contribution, and sea level rise.

INTERDISCIPLINARY

PAPERS

Women in Art: Kara Walker, Women, Gender, Race, History studies & Art intersection

A research paper discussing the works of Kara Walker and her themes of black trauma through racism and slavery. I studied her intentions and her references to her ambiguous black silhouettes of life on the plantation.

Moonlight: Gender, Race, and Film intersection

A group paper discussing the identity of black gay men in the movie Moonlight. We analyze how race & gender is represented on film, and how Moonlight is a progressive way to show black men in a new narrative against stereotypes.

Bridesmaids: Gender, Race, and Film intersection

A paper discussing how Bridesmaids was progressive in showing a different image of a white woman in romantic comedies but still playing it safe.

Beyonce Formation: Bigger Than Hip Hop Music, Media, and Politics

A paper discussing how important Formation is in our political climate. Beyonce is a female black artist that is outspoken and political.

Hip Hop Moral Debate: Bigger Than Hip Hop: Music, Media, and Politics

A paper discussing how consumers of Hip Hop should have a moral responsibility to clack culture if they're going to enjoy it.

Kanye West Fashion, Kanye West: The Hero's Journey Myth

A paper discussing how Kanye, as a black male artist, was able to democratize fashion stylistically through basic apparel. I follow his successful business but also the symbolism through Stuart Hall's concept of signifying practices. I also focus on power dynamics of his situation.

American Dinner

This is the final piece I created within the Kara Walker Research Paper. I utilize the most striking silhouettes to present diversity but also the bases of many stereotypes of minorities in American Culture. The "villain" of the piece is a critique of the president but also not limited to that. America's history with racism is embedded in our system.
